HRT and GLP-1 medicines

If you are using hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and a GLP-1 medicine such as Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) or Wegovy® (semaglutide), it is important to be aware that these medicines may affect how some HRT medicines are absorbed.

Why does this matter?

GLP-1 medicines work partly by slowing the rate at which the stomach empties. This can affect the absorption of medicines taken by mouth, including some forms of HRT.

Particular care may be needed for people taking oral progesterone as part of their HRT. Reduced absorption could affect how well treatment works and may increase the risk of unexpected bleeding.

What should I do?

Do not stop or change your HRT without speaking to a healthcare professional.

If you are taking HRT and start treatment with a GLP-1 medicine such as Mounjaro® or Wegovy®, it may be appropriate to review your HRT and discuss whether an alternative form of treatment would be more suitable.

When should I contact the practice?

Please contact us if you are using HRT and experience:

  • bleeding after menopause
  • bleeding after a long period without periods
  • spotting between periods
  • new or unusual pelvic symptoms

These symptoms should always be discussed with a healthcare professional.
