Contraceptive injectsions
We offer contraceptive injections as an effective and long-lasting method of contraception.
The injections contain a hormone called medroxyprogesterone acetate, which works by preventing ovulation and helping to prevent pregnancy.
At Corner Place Surgery, we offer both Depo-Provera® and Sayana® Press.
About contraceptive injections
Contraceptive injections are given every 12 to 14 weeks and provide ongoing protection against pregnancy.
They can be a suitable option for people who:
- do not want to take a daily contraceptive pill
- are looking for a longer-lasting contraceptive method
- are not suitable for some other forms of contraception
A clinician can discuss whether contraceptive injections are suitable for you.
Depo-Provera® and Sayana® Press
Sayana® Press contains the same medication as Depo-Provera® but is designed to be self-injected at home after appropriate training.
This means some patients may be able to manage their contraception without needing routine appointments at the surgery.
If you currently receive Depo-Provera® injections, your clinician may discuss whether switching to Sayana® Press is appropriate for you.
Switching to Sayana® Press
We offer eligible patients who currently receive Depo-Provera® injections the option to switch to Sayana® Press.
If you decide to switch:
- a clinician will discuss the option with you
- you will be shown how to safely administer the injection
- a prescription will be issued for you to collect from your pharmacy
Many patients find Sayana® Press convenient because it can be administered at home.
