Breast screening

Breast screening aims to find breast cancers at an early stage, often before any symptoms are noticed.

Regular screening helps identify cancers when they are easier to treat and can improve outcomes.

Who is invited?

Anyone registered with a GP as female between the ages of 50 and 70 years and 11 months will normally be invited for NHS breast screening every 3 years.

You will automatically receive an invitation when you are due for screening.

What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast used to look for signs of breast cancer.

The appointment is usually carried out by specially trained mammographers at a local screening unit.

Looking after your breast health

It's important to be familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel so that you can notice any changes.

You should contact your GP if you notice:

  • a lump or swelling in your breast, chest or armpit
  • changes in the size or shape of your breast
  • changes to the skin of your breast, such as dimpling or puckering
  • nipple discharge (if you are not pregnant or breastfeeding)
  • changes to the appearance of your nipple
  • persistent breast pain that is unusual for you
