Switching from Depo-Provera to Sayana Press

We will be offering eligible patients who currently receive Depo‑Provera injections every 12 to 14 weeks at the practice the option to switch to Sayana® Press.

Sayana® Press contains the same medication as Depo‑Provera, but it can be self‑injected at home, reducing the need for routine appointments at the surgery.

At your next appointment, the nurse may discuss this option with you. If you decide to switch, you will be shown how to give the injection yourself safely. A prescription will then be issued for you to collect from your pharmacy.

What is Sayana® Press?

Sayana® Press is a contraceptive injection that contains a hormone called medroxyprogesterone acetate. This is similar to the natural hormone progesterone.

It works by stopping ovulation and thickening cervical mucus, which helps prevent pregnancy.

It provides contraception for around 13 weeks.

What is medroxyprogesterone?

Medroxyprogesterone acetate is the active hormone used in both Depo‑Provera and Sayana® Press.

It is a type of medicine called a progestogen. These are similar to the natural hormone progesterone, which plays a role in the menstrual cycle.

This hormone works by stopping the release of an egg and making it less likely that sperm can reach an egg, helping to prevent pregnancy.

It is a prescription‑only medicine.

You will still be shown how to give the injection by a nurse before you start. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the practice.

How effective is it?

Sayana® Press is a very effective method of contraception.

It is more than 99% effective when used correctly and on time.

If the first injection is given within the first 5 days of your period, you will be protected straight away. If it is given at any other time, you will need to use additional contraception, such as condoms, for 7 days.

How do I use it?

It’s important to have your injection on time.

If more than 14 weeks have passed since your last injection, you may not be protected against pregnancy. You should contact the practice as soon as possible for advice and use additional contraception in the meantime.

What if I give the injection early?

If you give your injection earlier than planned, this is unlikely to cause harm.

However, you may notice more side effects.

Can I stop using it?

Yes, you can stop using Sayana® Press at any time.

If you plan to become pregnant, be aware that it can take some time for your fertility to return after your last injection. For some people, this can take several months or longer.
